Is the Catalan Opening still the solid, low-risk weapon it was 30 years ago, or can it still turn into a sudden attack? GM Mihail Marin, who has played the Catalan with White for more than three decades, asks whether modern engines have changed our understanding of its character. The answer comes through Wesley So vs Matthias Blübaum from the 2026 Olympiad in Samarkand (USA vs Germany), where White sacrificed two pawns in a Bg5 line Mihail admits he had never seen before. Along the way: the "pipe organ" mechanism borrowed from chess problems, where every defensive move opens a new attacking line; Alekhine's famous bishop strike against Bogoljubow at Triberg 1921; and the little-known Bronstein–Kholmov game from the 1957 Soviet Championship, which holds the key to the chance So missed. The verdict: engines find no objective advantage, but they confirm both faces of the Catalan. It is a sound positional opening that still gives White practical chances to change the rhythm at the right moment. ⏱ Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 03:27 So-Bluehbaum 04:31 The move I didn’t know 07:13 Changing the rhythm 09:12 The pipe organ mechanism 14:20 Alekhine-Bogoljubow, Triberg, 1921 19:37 An interesting endgame with two pawns down for White 22:48 So misses his chance for an advantage 25:39 “Did you not know the game Bronstein-Kholmov, 1957?” 30:37 The saving queen sacrifice 📚 Topics covered: Catalan Opening, Open Catalan, pawn sacrifice, changing the rhythm, pipe organ mechanism, attack with opposite-colored bishops, Wesley So, Matthias Blübaum, Samarkand Olympiad 2026, Alekhine–Bogoljubow 1921, Bronstein–Kholmov 1957, rook vs queen fortress ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📘 Recommended Resources ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🔗 Learn from the Legends (3rd Edition) by GM Mihail Marin: https://www.newinchess.com/learn-from... 🔗 Get ChessBase — the ultimate tool for chess analysis and preparation: https://shop.chessbase.com/en/categor... ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎓 About GM Mihail Marin Grandmaster Mihail Marin is a three-time Romanian National Champion, Olympic medalist, former second to Judit Polgar, ChessBase author, and Chessable instructor.
