What if the man who once commanded South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit is now being asked to explain why photographs, messages and police deployments appear to tell a very different story? At the Madlanga Commission, retired Hawks boss Lieutenant General Dr Godfrey Lebeya was confronted with names connected to an alleged criminal network, photographs showing powerful figures together, and WhatsApp messages that appeared to raise uncomfortable questions about what senior law enforcement officials knew. And Lebeya’s answer was striking. He said he had no knowledge of the alleged Big Five Cartel. He denied knowing most of the people whose photographs were placed before him. He insisted he was incorruptible. But the more the commission examined the evidence, the more difficult the questions became. The images shown to the commission were not ordinary photographs. They included men whose names have repeatedly surfaced in testimony surrounding allegations of organised crime and political interference. Among them were Katiso, known as KT, Molefe. Steve Motsumi. Ignatius Mothakathi. Andrew Boy Mthethwa, also known as King Nyambose. And the late Jothan, known as Mswazi, Msibi. Another photograph included businessman Zesimdumise, known as Ze, Nxumalo.
