Ancient Arkaroola Reef: One of the key features is the Arkaroola Reef, which is more than 600 million years old. It preserves evidence of an ancient marine environment that existed long before complex life appeared on Earth. It contains a wide variety of colourful and folded rocks that reveal a long history of tectonic activity, erosion, and sedimentation. The area connects with Tillite Gorge, where rocks known as tillites record the Sturtian Ice Age, a major global glaciation that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago. Our trip to the Flinders and Gammon Ranges followed one of the best winter rainfall seasons in over 50 years, transforming the normally rugged outback into a landscape of remarkable colour and life. Hillsides, creek beds, and plains were carpeted with wildflowers, creating spectacular displays throughout the region. The standout was the iconic Sturt Desert Pea, whose brilliant crimson flowers with their distinctive black centres appeared in extraordinary numbers, providing a stunning contrast against the lush green countryside and red earth. The exceptional seasonal conditions made this a truly memorable visit to one of Australia's most beautiful arid landscapes.
