Austria’s Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Petra Schneebauer, presented a model for how a relatively small country can build an outsized role in quantum technology: concentrate world-class research, connect it across institutions, translate that science into companies and infrastructure, and use international partnerships to extend its reach. At Quantum World Congress 2026, Schneebauer traced Austria’s quantum ecosystem from its historic contributions to the field through today’s Quantum Science Austria cluster, European quantum infrastructure, commercialization efforts, Industrial Strategy 2035, and growing emphasis on science diplomacy and research security. Her argument was less about national scale than ecosystem density—and how Austria intends to convert that density into lasting technological influence.
