R.C. Sproul contrasts the Roman Catholic understanding of justification with what he considers the heart of the good news recovered by the Protestant Reformation. He describes a system in which justification can be lost through mortal sin, recovered through penance, and followed by purgatory if a person dies with remaining impurities. Sproul then asks a simple question: “Is that good news?” For a sinner who knows the depth of his own remaining sin, he argues that the prospect of standing before God on the basis of an inherent righteousness would lead only to despair. The good news, Sproul says, is found outside ourselves. The sinner acknowledges his sin, abandons confidence in his own righteousness, and trusts in Christ alone. At that moment, the righteousness of Christ becomes his covering—not merely until his next sin, but forever.
