🔴 Rhodophyta (Red Algae) | Video 9/26 | NEET & Class XI CBSE Board
Understand the key features of Red Algae (Rhodophyta) — an essential topic for NEET and CBSE Class 11!
📌 Topics Covered:
• Characteristic red colour due to phycoerythrin pigment
• Phycocyanin (blue pigment) also present
• Habitat — mostly marine, deep sea zones
• Cell wall with agar (used commercially)
• Examples: Porphyra, Gelidium, Gracilaria
• Stored food: floridean starch
• Commercial importance of red algae (agar, carrageenans)
🎯 NEET Shortcut:
"Red algae = R4: Red pigment, Reserve food (floridean starch), Rocky marine habitat, Rhodophyta." Works like a charm in MCQs!

Transcript with Timestamp
0:00 Dr. Neela Bakore introduces Rhodophyceae (red algae) — aquatic, mostly marine.
Pigments & Color (0:51 onward):
0:51 Contains Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll d, and phycoerythrin (red pigment).
1:28–2:00 In deep water, algae appear red — higher phycoerythrin concentration, since phycoerythrin absorbs the blue-green light that penetrates deep water.
2:30 In shallow water, algae appear green — more chlorophyll, which absorbs the red light available near the surface.
3:13 Examples: Gelidium, Gracilaria, Porphyra, and Chondrus (Irish moss).
3:45 Stored food is floridean starch, structurally similar to amylopectin and glycogen.
4:26 Cell wall composition: cellulose, pectic material, and some sulfates.
5:14 Often called "showy plants" for their beautiful, lace-like appearance.
Reproduction (5:32 onward):
5:51 Vegetative — via fragmentation.
6:07 Asexual — via non-motile spores.
6:17 Sexual — oogamous: a stationary egg and a non-motile male gamete that's carried to it.
6:44 Key feature: complete absence of flagella in both spores and gametes.
Economic Importance (7:29 onward):
7:29 Gelidium and Gracilaria — commercial source of agar, used to solidify nutrient media.
7:54 Porphyra — edible, used as a flavoring agent in soups and dishes.
8:08 Chondrus (Irish moss) — edible; historically significant as food during the Irish famine.
8:24 Carrageenin, a hydrocolloid from red algae, is used to prevent settling in commercial chocolate milk.
