♀️ Funaria – Female Head & Fertilization | Video 14/26 | NEET & Class XI CBSE Board
Understand the female reproductive structure of Funaria and how fertilization occurs in mosses — a NEET and Board exam essential!
📌 Topics Covered:
• Structure of archegonium: venter, neck, oosphere
• Archegonial head (archegoniophore) structure
• Role of paraphyses in female head
• How antherozoids reach the archegonium (chemotaxis)
• Fertilization: antherozoid + oosphere → zygote
• Transition from gametophyte to sporophyte generation
🎯 NEET Insight:
"Archegonium is flask-shaped with venter + neck" — standard NEET MCQ wording. Also remember fertilization requires water (rain/dew)!

Transcript with Timestamp
0:00 Topic: detailed structure of the female branch/head (female head) in Funaria.
0:41 The female head is slightly convex, surrounded by large protective leaves.
Archegonium Structure (0:55 onward):
0:55 The female sex organ, archegonium, has three parts: stalk, venter (swollen part), and a long neck.
1:29 Paraphyses sit between the archegonia — unbranched, multicellular, similar to male-head paraphyses but with non-swollen tips.
2:10 Multicellular stalk attaches the archegonium to the head.
2:28 Above it, the venter: solid wall of a few cell layers, with a large egg at its center.
3:00 The neck: wall made of six vertical rows of cells, enclosing a central space called the canal.
3:45 The canal is filled with six canal cells.
Fertilization (4:40 onward):
4:40 Sperm is biflagellate and needs a thin water film to swim to the egg.
5:06 Sperm movement is chemotactic — guided by attractant chemicals.
5:39 As sperm approach, canal cells dissociate, releasing mucilage, malic acid, and sugar to attract and lubricate the sperm's path.
6:33 Fertilization is oogamous — a large, non-motile egg fertilized by a small, motile sperm within the venter.
Post-Fertilization (6:56 onward):
6:56 The fertilized egg becomes a diploid zygote, which develops into a sporophyte.
7:37 The sporophyte (diploid) grows on and remains attached to the haploid female branch.
8:24 Sporophyte has three parts: foot (embedded in the neck), seta (stalk), and capsule (where spores form).
9:14 The sporophyte remains dependent on the gametophyte.
