Mikuni Pass (Mikuni-toge) is a scenic driving spot located almost in the center of Hokkaido, on the eastern side of Daisetsuzan National Park.
It is the highest point among all national highways in Hokkaido, standing at an elevation of 1,139 meters. Situated along Route 273, which connects Kamishihoro Town with the Kitami and Sounkyo areas, it is renowned for offering panoramic views of vast virgin forests (a sea of trees) and dynamic mountain ranges.
From the observation deck, you can take in the magnificent scenery of the Daisetsuzan Mountains and the expansive forest stretching out below. Within the premises, "Mikuni Pass Cafe" provides a great spot to take a break while enjoying hand-drip coffee, espresso soft-serve ice cream, curry, and other refreshments.
A short distance down toward Kamishihoro, you can look down upon Matsumi Bridge—a red curved arch bridge set against the lush, grand forest—creating one of Hokkaido’s most iconic landscapes.
