Just 30 minutes from the Colosseum — by train — is a different kind of Rome. Not temples, not forums. Just sand, salt air, and the Tyrrhenian Sea. This is Ostia Lido, Rome's beach, and it's where Romans themselves actually come to escape the city. If you're thinking of ancient Roman ruins, you're thinking of Ostia Antica — the archaeological site dating back to the 4th century BC. Ostia Lido is the modern beach town next to it: long stretches of golden sand, the characteristic architecture of the 1930s rationalist lido, and a seafront that has been the summer escape of Romans for over a century. This video captures what Romans actually do at the beach: sunbeds and umbrellas at the stabilimenti balneari (private beach clubs), kids running into the waves, long seafood lunches at restaurants with the sea right in front of them — spaghetti alle vongole, frittura di paranza, grilled fish — and the unhurried afternoon passeggiata along the waterfront.
