NEBRASKA 1978 Cold Case Solved After 33 Years by a Single Fingerprint

On October 17, 1978, Carroll Bonnet was found dead in his downtown Omaha apartment. He was 61 years old, a quiet hospital worker at Bishop Clarkson Hospital who lived alone. Someone had stabbed him, stolen his wallet and car, cut his phone line, and left a taunting note at the scene: "I am leaving this crime with only one clue. Find it yourself Pig." Omaha Police lifted high-quality fingerprints from the bathroom door, medicine cabinet, beer cans, and telephone. Crime lab technician Michael Stone processed the evidence meticulously. Nothing matched. Bonnet's stolen 1964 Buick was recovered days later in Cicero, Illinois, but the trail ended there. Without a national fingerprint database, there was no way to search beyond local records. The case went cold. For 30 years, those prints sat in an evidence room. The killer walked free. Michael Stone, the technician who lifted the original print, compared it "countless" times over his career, hoping the answer would come before he retired. It didn't. Then in December 2008, everything changed. A fax from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement prompted the Omaha cold case unit to run the prints through modern databases. Senior Crime Lab Technician Laura Casey entered the 30-year-old print into the FBI's IAFIS database, a system holding over 77 million records that didn't exist when Bonnet was murdered. In under five hours, the system returned a match: Jerry Watson, a career burglar from Cicero, Illinois, who had been 19 at the time of the killing. DNA from cigarette butts, a beer can, a palmprint, and a hair found near the body all confirmed Watson's presence at the scene. And when Detective Doug Herout re-examined every item from the original evidence, he found what the killer had bragged about leaving behind: Watson's own name, written in cursive on a newspaper beside the body, then crossed out. On August 25, 2011, a jury convicted Jerry Watson of first-degree murder. On October 17, 2011, exactly 33 years to the day after Bonnet's body was discovered, Watson was sentenced to life in prison.
