In June 1996, eighteen-year-old Angie Dodge was murdered in her Idaho Falls apartment. Police recovered clean, usable DNA from the crime scene. It should have solved the case. Instead, detectives coerced a false confession from twenty-year-old Christopher Tapp, a young man whose DNA never matched. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
For twenty years, Tapp sat behind bars while the real killer walked free. The real killer who had been living directly across the street from Angie's apartment the entire time.
This documentary traces every turn of the case. The brutal crime. The coerced confession built over nine interrogation sessions and seven polygraph tests. The trial where the jury saw only a fraction of the footage. And the mother, Carol Dodge, who watched all sixty hours of interrogation tapes, realized the wrong man was in prison, and did something no murder victim's mother had ever done before: she fought to free the man convicted of killing her daughter.
The breakthrough came through genetic genealogy. CeCe Moore of Parabon NanoLabs worked a severely degraded DNA sample, missing nearly 40% of its genetic data, through the public database GEDmatch. After months of painstaking reverse genealogy and multiple false leads, she identified a hidden descendant whose stepfather's surname had kept him invisible for twenty-three years.
His name was Brian Leigh Dripps Sr. He had lived at 459 "I" Street. Forty feet from Angie's front door.
A discarded cigarette butt confirmed the match. On May 15, 2019, Dripps was arrested and confessed. He said he acted alone. He said he did not know Christopher Tapp.
On July 17, 2019, Tapp was formally exonerated, the first person in history cleared through investigative genetic genealogy. In 2021, Dripps was sentenced to twenty years to life.
One case. Two injustices undone. The wrong man freed. The real killer named.
This is the story of Angie Dodge, the mother who refused to stop fighting, and the forty feet of distance that hid the truth for twenty-three years.
