There was a gravel lot at the edge of town where the stones gave out into weeds, and an old sky-blue Chevrolet that never went anywhere in particular. Two of them sat on the bonnet with the whole evening ahead and four quarters in his pocket that never got spent. Across the road the town was lighting up one window at a time. A lit window over the bakery. Two above the hardware store. Three in a house with the porch light on. She pointed and started counting, and he lost the count almost immediately because he was watching her instead. She drew a circle in the dust beside her shoe. The radio played behind a thin curtain somewhere. A window above the diner blinked on and off like a lighthouse. The air turned cool ahead of the rain, and she made him name the next one slowly. Then the last bus of the night crossed the far end of the lot and threw a band of gold across the gravel, and he said something quiet that turned out to be true.
