Past the popcorn stand and over the gravel, all the way to the back row, parked up close against the fence where the shadows and the whitewash travel.
The sky went blue-black. The glow came up off the hood. She said hold my hand now — and I never did let go.
In the back of a borrowed Chevy, holding hands with you. That double feature made the whole wide world feel new. Close to your side, while the old screen trembled. We were young and alive.
The first film had a kiss in it and the second one had a cowboy, and we laughed when the speaker crackled. She passed me a cherry soda with the straw bent a little crooked. Her ring sat on the dash and I watched the way her shy grin looked. The moon climbed up over the chrome and the blue glass, and she leaned in a little closer, and I wanted that moment to last.
The highway rolls now and the cars all sound the same. But I still see a face there, in the glow, where I learned your name.
