Mount Buller, Spray Lakes area
10 km with 1,075 metres of elevation gain.
Wow, this is a very scenic hike, but the approach on Highway 742 can be rough. An early start is best if you want to avoid morning traffic, dirt, and dust on the road.
The hike starts with about 3 km in the trees, passing two wooden creek bridges. For the first 3 km, the trail rolls gently up and down while gaining roughly 200 metres. Do not cross the third bridge, as many others have mentioned; instead, turn left. Keep an eye on your map because there is no definite trail here, just a faint beaten path that is not always easy to follow. Soon you will reach a drainage where you need to climb up. It is a fun scramble. After that, turn right and use your downloaded map again to stay on track. We lost the trail on the way up and had to side-slope quite a bit. According to AllTrails, the actual route follows the drainage, but we stayed to the right, passing through scree, slabs, and ribs as we climbed. On the way back, we used the drainage. Once you reach the col, which is quite small, the summit objective is on your right. It looks steep from there, but it is manageable. You have already gained most of the elevation by this point. The scree trail climbs in small switchbacks until you reach about 2,700 metres of elevation, just below the summit. There is a flat slab there, that could be sketchy if wet, so be careful. If you are not comfortable with the slab, you can go left or right around it. From there, the peak is only about 10 minutes away.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable hike with truly jaw-dropping views. I have seen Spray Lake from several summits, but I think Mount Buller offers one of the best views of the lake.
