A trail crew sits around the evening fire on the Chisholm Trail, summer of 1871, two months out of Texas in the same shirts they left in. They drink from a creek the whole herd has just walked through.
By one count, disease and bad water killed more than 20,000 emigrants on the overland trails — far more than every Wild West gunfight together. The real killer wasn't a gun. It was a habit.
The countdown:
· Bear grease in the hair and teeth cleaned with a willow twig — or nothing
· The hotel roller towel shared by every guest, and one barbershop bathtub reused all day
· Buffalo chips gathered bare-handed for fuel
· Clothes worn for months, lice called "graybacks," and the boiling pot
· Saloon floors of sawdust, tobacco spit and worse — and strangers sharing a hotel bed
· The outhouse and the mail-order catalog
· Cholera from the creek where the cattle stood
· And the crude trail habit that actually kept men alive
