April 22, 1887. A parlor in New York.
On her wedding day, a thirty-year-old bride signed a legal paper titled “Marriage Settlement between Andrew Carnegie and Louise Whitfield.” In it, she gave up every claim to the fortune of the man who would become one of the richest men in the world.
She had already waited six years to marry him. One sentence from his mother, reportedly spoken in her family's parlor in 1881, had kept her waiting.
Her name was Louise Whitfield Carnegie. Her husband's name lives on through libraries, a concert hall, and a university. But her own story has remained largely forgotten.
In this historical documentary, Origin Vault explores the life of Louise Whitfield Carnegie, her long wait to marry Andrew Carnegie, the controversial marriage settlement, and the private story behind one of history's most famous fortunes.
Drawing on historical documents, Andrew Carnegie's autobiography, archival records, and biographies by Joseph Frazier Wall and David Nasaw, this documentary uncovers the woman behind the famous name — and the questions history rarely asks about her life.
