At seventy-one, I sat at my own paid-off kitchen table and listened to my children sort out my truck and my house like I'd already left the room — twenty-two years a Marine, buried alive by my own family, with a hole nobody ever dug. 00:00 — They Buried Me at My Own Table 02:15 — Twenty-Two Years in One Box 05:21 — Nobody Is Going to Want It 08:19 — He Ordered My Dinner For Me 09:36 — A Man Named Earl 10:39 — As Far From That Table As I Could Get 12:24 — One Way, One Bag 14:20 — My Finger Was on the Button 15:21 — A Stranger With a Pot 16:54 — El Marino 22:36 — Nineteen Hundred Dollars 27:02 — The Man Rotting on the Stool 30:31 — The Name a Boy Gave Me 35:31 — The Message From Emily My name's Roy. Twenty-two years a United States Marine, retired a gunnery sergeant. A Texas boy who spent his whole life being the rock — you had a problem, you called Roy. Then Diane passed, and about a year later my heart tried to quit on me in a grocery store, and I woke up in a hospital to my own kids planning for after. Talking about me in the past tense while I lay right there. They started feeding me the soft food. My son ordered my dinner for me at his own birthday like I was a child who wasn't in the room. And nobody at that table so much as noticed. You know what they were quietly pricing out for me? Assisted living. Five, six thousand dollars a month to share a hallway with strangers and be managed, kindly, until I had the good manners to die. So I did the thing nobody who knew me would've bet a nickel on. Sixty-nine years old, I packed one duffel bag and my Marine shadow box — the one nobody was going to want — and I bought a one-way ticket to a city on the far edge of the southern Philippines called Zamboanga. One way. Not a round trip I chickened out on. One way. This is where my story really begins.
