Evan Hamilton is a former community lead at Reddit, where he spent five years working with the volunteer moderators who run its communities. He later crossed to the brand side as Director of Community at HubSpot, where he had to make Reddit work for a B2B brand. So what's the insider secret? There isn't one. It's hard work and listening to people. In this webinar, Evan sits down with Rob Fawkes from Standing on Giants to look back on what he learned on both sides: why moderators hold the power, why the biggest subreddit is usually the wrong place to start, and how, during his time at HubSpot, his team built a Reddit presence through co-moderation, AMAs, champions and employee advocates, including the approach that didn't work. A practical session for brand, marketing and product leaders, B2B included, who know Reddit matters for visibility but want to get it right rather than get banned. What's covered: What Evan saw inside Reddit after the 2015 moderator blackout Who subreddit moderators are, and how to understand what drives them How subreddits fork, and why the biggest one is usually the wrong place to start Approaching moderators "hat in hand" and offering real value How Evan's team at HubSpot co-moderated its subreddit and ran AMAs Customer champions vs employee advocates: what worked and what didn't Why Reddit rewards niche, nitty-gritty expertise over big names Reddit, LLMs and AI search, and why shortcuts get you banned Live Q&A: Reddit ads, local subreddits, misinformation, competitors and more About the speakers: Evan Hamilton was most recently Director of Community at HubSpot, where he built community experiences that drive customer engagement and retention. Before HubSpot, he spent five years leading community at Reddit, setting the strategy that supported tens of thousands of volunteer moderators running hundreds of thousands of communities. He's been bringing people together professionally for over 20 years, with stints at Nextdoor, CMX, UserVoice and more. Outside work he makes music, and he co-founded International Beer Day, which grew from an idea between friends into events around the world. Rob Fawkes heads up Client Partnerships at Standing on Giants. Rob leads the charge on Reddit, a platform he's genuinely a bit obsessed with. He's a firm believer that the best way onto Reddit is the slow way: building actual relationships with moderators and communities rather than parachuting in with a brand voice nobody asked for.
