Ghana has made 2 moves that have surprised a lot of people. On October 6, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that President John Mahama's Cabinet has decided Ghana should formally apply to join BRICS — the bloc led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. At the same time, the Bank of Ghana confirmed that Ghanaian importers can now pay Chinese suppliers straight from their cedi accounts, with the Chinese side receiving yuan — no American dollars needed in the middle. Then, the very next day, the headline everywhere was that the cedi is Africa's worst-performing currency. Why now? In this episode of Frontline Africa, I break down what Ghana's BRICS bid and the cedi–yuan route really mean for the ordinary Ghanaian trader, student and shopper. Why does Donald Trump see BRICS as a threat to the dollar? Where will Ghana get the yuan it needs when it buys 3 times more from China than it sells? And what happened when Nigeria signed its own yuan deal with China under Muhammadu Buhari — is that deal dead, and did it save the naira? Nigeria is the mirror Ghana must look into. Watch to the end and tell me your answers to my 3 questions in the comments.
