Summer in rural Japan is filled with quiet moments that I never thought much about when I was younger.
In this video, I'm spending a few more summer days at my family home in the Japanese countryside.
My father's morning begins by offering fresh water at our kamidana before he makes a simple breakfast and leaves for work. Later, we enjoy a barbecue in the garden, my sister's family comes to visit, and our usually quiet home suddenly becomes much livelier. ☺️
We also make obota (botamochi), a traditional food my family has prepared for generations during Obon. Ever since I was a child, I was taught to think of these little rice cakes as a small packed lunch for our ancestors on their journey back to the other world. This year, my young niece and nephew joined these familiar summer days with us, which made the tradition feel a little different—and even more meaningful.
Of course, life in rural Japan isn't always as peaceful as these moments may seem. Like anywhere else, there are both beautiful things and challenges that come with everyday life. For us, too, choosing where and how to live—and whether to live closer to family—isn't always a simple decision. We're still slowly searching for the way of life that feels right for us.
Perhaps that's also why I've come to appreciate these ordinary family moments more as I've grown older: eating together, walking through the neighborhood, watching the children explore the garden, and ending a summer evening with fireworks.
Nothing extraordinary, but perhaps these are the moments we remember years later. 🤍
🌿 A little more about “obota” on Patreon
I wrote more about the meaning behind obota, why my family brings it to our ancestors during Obon, and the memories and traditions connected to it in my Little Things About Japan series on Patreon.
If you enjoyed this quiet glimpse into Japanese family life and would like to explore the small traditions behind what you see in my videos, I'd be very happy to see you there. ☺️

One small note: for the flow of the video, a few scenes have been edited slightly out of chronological order. I hope you'll watch them warmly as part of our summer memories. ☺️
Thank you, as always, for spending your time with me.
I hope this video brings a little calm to your day, wherever you are. 🕊️

If you enjoyed the quieter reflections in this video and would like to hear more of my thoughts on life, nature, and the sense of spirituality found in Japan, you might also enjoy this video from Mt. Takao. ☺️
I spend a quiet day surrounded by nature while sharing a little more about the things I reflect on in everyday life, as well as the sense of spirituality woven into Japanese culture and some ways of thinking influenced by Shinto.
