The Pacific Northwest is facing a disaster scenario unlike almost anything else in the United States. Hidden beneath the Pacific Ocean, the Cascadia Subduction Zone stretches for more than 600 miles from Northern California through Oregon and Washington toward Vancouver Island. Scientists now have new evidence showing that parts of this massive fault may be tightly locked and storing enormous amounts of energy.
Researchers have reconstructed the magnitude 9.0+ earthquake that struck the region in 1700 using ghost forests, tsunami deposits, tree rings, Japanese historical records, computer models, and modern seafloor measurements. Recent modeling found that full length ruptures around magnitude 9.1 best matched multiple lines of evidence.
Even more concerning, seafloor measurements suggest the shallow section of Cascadia may be almost completely locked. If it ruptures, the earthquake could produce powerful shaking, sudden coastal land sinking, and a devastating tsunami that may reach some coastal communities within minutes.
This documentary explores what scientists know, what remains uncertain, and why preparation could make the difference when Cascadia finally moves again.
