We checked all 153 highway councils in England. 14 take cross-pavement channel applications today, 17 are trialling, 103 took government money and have nothing live, and 19 block it. Kent, West Northamptonshire and Brighton & Hove took grant money and still tell residents no. London is the worst place to try: 36% of boroughs block channels, against 6% elsewhere. A no costs you about £950 a year in street charging. → Hyundai Ioniq 3 UK price: from £22,245, or £18,495 after the £3,750 Electric Car Grant. The 61kWh version is £21,995 after grant with a claimed 308 miles. At 3.5 mi/kWh, 6.6p overnight is under 2p a mile; a 54p street charger is about 15p; a 79p rapid about 23p. → The new rules: from 21 October 2026, a cross-pavement channel installed or authorised by the highway council doesn't need planning permission in England. It doesn't apply in conservation areas, a listed building's grounds or scheduled monuments — and you still need council consent.
