In this Episode we were privileged to host Mr. Mambo and hold little chats about Hypergamy.
To introduce this To[pic lets first understand Hypergamy....
Hypergamy means forming a relationship or marrying someone perceived as having higher social or economic status—such as greater income, education, family standing, or professional influence. The term is often used in discussions of women choosing wealthier men, but it can apply to anyone and is not a rule that explains all relationships.
In Kenya, ideas associated with hypergamy may be shaped by:
Economic pressures: High living costs and unemployment can make financial stability an important consideration when choosing a partner.
Education and career: People may seek partners with similar or higher education, professional prospects, or ambition.
Family and community expectations: Families may consider a prospective partner’s character, background, religion, and ability to contribute to a household. These expectations differ widely.
Bride wealth and marriage customs: In some communities, bride wealth is part of marriage negotiations. It is a cultural practice with varied meanings—not simply a price placed on a bride, and not a universal Kenyan custom.
Changing roles: More women have independent careers and incomes, while many men face expectations to be providers. These changing realities can create tension, but they also allow couples to negotiate more equal arrangements.
Social media and dating culture: Online portrayals of wealth and “provider” relationships can amplify status-based expectations, though they do not represent everyone’s real-life relationships.
It’s important not to treat Kenyan women or men as a single group. Attitudes vary by individual, community, religion, generation, location, and personal circumstances. Choosing a financially secure partner is not automatically exploitation, and wanting a partner with less money is not automatically proof of genuine love. Healthy relationships depend on mutual respect, honesty, shared expectations, and freely given consent.
Couples can avoid misunderstandings by discussing finances, work, family responsibilities, bride wealth or wedding expectations, and long-term goals early in the relationship.
