India's maritime security capabilities are set to receive a boost with the induction of the new warship INS Mangrol into the Indian Navy. Specially designed to detect enemy submarines and counter the threats they pose, the vessel will strengthen India's coastal defence operations. The ship, which belongs to the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) category, will be commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Monday in the presence of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. The warship was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kerala. It has been named after Mangrol, a coastal town in Gujarat's Junagadh district. The new vessel also carries forward the legacy of the earlier INS Mangrol, a minesweeper that served in the Indian Navy until 2004. While the previous ship was primarily used to detect and neutralise naval mines, the new warship focuses on anti-submarine operations.
