Which video games sold the most from 1980 to 2026? This animated bar chart race compares estimated yearly video game sales worldwide, following the rise of GTA, Minecraft, Mario and Pokémon across more than four decades of gaming history. The story begins with Atari and the home versions of Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Frogger and Donkey Kong. Arcade games reach living rooms, Pitfall helps establish original console adventures, and the cartridge market crashes before Nintendo brings Super Mario Bros. to the NES in 1985. The Game Boy takes Tetris and Mario into handheld gaming. Sonic challenges Nintendo, Street Fighter II brings arcade fighting home, and Pokémon turns collecting and trading into a worldwide success. Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 and Gran Turismo follow as three-dimensional games change what players expect from a console. Then Grand Theft Auto changes its place in gaming. GTA III brings Liberty City into three dimensions in 2001. Vice City follows in 2002, San Andreas expands the series in 2004, and GTA V arrives in 2013. Watch Rockstar's games rise through the sales rankings and keep finding buyers across console generations and PC. Minecraft builds a different kind of success through creating, exploring and survival. Wii Sports reaches households through motion controls, Call of Duty and Battlefield compete for shooter audiences, and PUBG brings battle royale into the paid game market. Animal Crossing New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokémon keep Nintendo prominent while Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3 and Hogwarts Legacy bring large open worlds to new audiences. The later years also show the lasting reach of Terraria, Stardew Valley and Human Fall Flat, alongside newer releases such as Black Myth Wukong. Some games sell quickly at launch. Others keep finding new players years later. GTA V remains part of that story as attention turns to GTA VI. From Atari cartridges to modern PC and console releases, this video follows changing sales rankings across retro games, Nintendo classics, open-world adventures, shooters and independent games.
