Most Popular Anime Characters (1970-2026) | Goku vs Luffy

The most popular anime characters from 1970 to 2026, following the rise and fall of Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Pikachu and generations of anime icons. This animated bar chart race compares changing character popularity across Dragon Ball, One Piece, Pokemon, Naruto, Sailor Moon, Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen and many more series. The story begins with the television characters who helped build anime's early audience. Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Kimba, Sazae, Tiger Mask and the baseball hero Hyuma Hoshi share the screen before giant robots and space adventures bring Koji Kabuto, Captain Harlock, Amuro Ray, Char Aznable and Maetel into the picture. Anime already includes sports, family comedy, romance and science fiction long before its later global boom. The 1980s bring Lum, Nausicaa, Kenshiro and the beginning of Goku's Dragon Ball journey. Fan magazine polls give readers a way to choose their favorites, while returning television series and overseas broadcasts introduce familiar characters to new audiences. The next decade brings Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion, Pokemon and a growing range of heroes with very different personalities. Goku and Vegeta become enduring rivals. Naruto and Sasuke turn friendship and conflict into one of anime's best-known relationships. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew build a voyage across decades of One Piece, while Pikachu becomes a familiar face across generations of Pokemon. Supporting characters also build large followings, including Rei Ayanami, Kurama, Kakashi, Itachi, Zoro and Nami. Later years bring Eren and Levi from Attack on Titan, Tanjiro and Nezuko from Demon Slayer, and Gojo, Yuji and Sukuna from Jujutsu Kaisen. Older favorites compete with newer characters as new seasons, major story moments and fan votes renew attention. Luffy wins One Piece's worldwide character poll in 2021, Minato wins NARUTOP99 in 2023, and Goku wins Dragon Ball's worldwide vote announced in January 2026. This comparison runs through September 2026. Popularity scores are historical estimates, not a count of individual fans. Who is your favorite anime character, and which era had the strongest lineup?
