Lullaby 07:53 Valentin Silvestrov’s Melodies of the Moments - Cycle III is a three-piece work composed for violin and piano in 2005. When I performed these pieces with violin, I kept thinking that the music was somehow asking to be heard as piano solo. There is something in the texture itself that seems to lead in that direction - the piano part already feels so complete and self-contained. So, years later, I finally decided to follow that thought and make it happen: I arranged all three pieces for solo piano, trying to preserve their fragile, intimate character while letting the piano carry the music on its own. Melodies of the Moments consists of 22 pieces in seven cycles for violin and piano. Cycle III contains three pieces: Lullaby, Barcarole, and Lullaby. Silvestrov described these melodies as “flashing moments, captured, frozen in time” - songs without words. *Valentin Silvestrov (b. 1937, Kyiv) is one of Ukraine’s most distinctive composers. His music has passed through radically different periods, from the avant-garde of the 1960s to the quieter, more reflective language that became increasingly characteristic of his later work. This is only the second time I have recorded Silvestrov for this channel. The first time was in the weeks after the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At that time, Silvestrov had just left Kyiv and eventually arrived in Berlin, where he has lived since. According to his publisher, he fled Ukraine with his daughter and granddaughter in March 2022. Almost five years later, the war is still going on. A great deal has changed, and at the same time, some things have not changed nearly enough. The number of lives lost and the scale of destruction continue to grow. Ukraine has endured, and Silvestrov continues to live and work in Berlin. Perhaps this is also why I wanted to return to his music.
