Nick was 41 stops into his 168-stop route when the first signs showed up. People standing in parking lots. Customers opening doors and just staring. A man in a dark hallway walking toward him with dry unblinking eyes.
While dispatch sent messages saying "continue route" and "stay hydrated," Nick figured out the one rule that kept him alive.. stop moving and they find you. The longer you stay still, the faster they come. Sleeping is the worst. A sleeping person is a lighthouse.
Armed with nothing but a delivery van, a head full of shortcut routes, and a growing group of strangers he pulled from cars and drive-thrus and apartment walkways, Nick drove loops through the East Valley. No plan. No weapons. Just a van that never stopped and a rule nobody taught them.
This is the full story of how 8 ordinary people survived the first 4 days.. a delivery driver who couldn't sit still, a coffee shop worker in stolen flip flops, a retired electrician who could hotwire a gas station, a billing clerk and her 5 year old who only survived because the kid threw a tantrum, and a landscaper who lost his sister in a storage unit and never talked about it.
They lost people. They lost the van. They kept walking.
