DIY DuraVent Chimney Installation... Was It Worth It?
After receiving a quote of over $5,000 to install a wood stove chimney in my barn, I decided there was NO WAY I was paying that much money. Instead, I ordered the DuraVent chimney components, rented a lift, recruited my nephew Scott and decided to tackle the entire installation myself.
How hard could it possibly be?
Well... apparently a LOT harder than I expected!
In this video, we're installing a complete DuraVent DuraPlus chimney system through the wall of my old barn, using insulated triple-wall chimney pipe outside and black double-wall stove pipe inside. The goal is to get my grandfather's old 1950s wood stove operational before winter arrives here in Northeast Ohio.
We start by finishing the framing for the wall thimble and installing the DuraVent through-the-wall chimney kit. Then comes the exterior tee, support bracket, chimney sections, wall braces and chimney cap. With a 55-foot boom lift at our disposal, at least we don't have to spend the entire day climbing ladders!
Unfortunately, that's where the easy part ends.
Between frustrating hardware, difficult-to-access screws, components that don't seem to fit together properly and installation instructions that leave plenty to be desired, this DIY chimney installation turns into one of the most aggravating projects I've tackled in a long time.
And believe me, I have some opinions about the DuraVent system by the time we're finished!
Once the exterior chimney is installed, we move inside to assemble the double-wall stove pipe, install the 90-degree elbow, support the horizontal section and connect everything to my grandfather's old wood-burning stove.
Then comes the moment of truth.
Will the chimney actually draft properly? Will the smoke go outside? And after all that frustration, was doing the installation myself really worth it?
The first fire finally gives us our answer!
Here's how the numbers worked out:
Professional installation quote: $5,053
My original DIY budget: $2,500
Actual DIY cost, including lift rental: $2,169.88
That's a substantial savings, but it certainly wasn't free money. This installation required plenty of time, patience, problem-solving and a few choice words along the way!
I also share my experience working with the DuraVent components, the challenges of installing a chimney on an older barn and what I learned from doing the work myself.
This wood stove belonged to my grandfather, so getting it installed and working means a little more to me than simply heating the barn. It's another big step toward turning this old building into a comfortable, functional workshop for year-round firewood production and DIY projects.
One important note: This video documents my personal installation experience, not a certified chimney-installation tutorial. Wood stove installations involve serious fire and carbon monoxide hazards. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, applicable building codes and required clearances, and have your installation inspected by a qualified professional before regular use.
Next up, we're moving on to concrete work around the barns as the race to get everything finished before winter continues!
Thanks for watching Sam's Doing Stuff. Sometimes DIY saves you a pile of money... but it sure doesn't save you from a headache!
