Half-Life Goes on the Drive
I've been building PCs for more than twenty years.
They've had names.
The Pixel Collider.
The Indifference Engine.
War Machine.
Frankenstein.
The Rig of Theseus.
Parts changed. Standards changed. Cases changed. Entire generations of hardware came and went.
The ritual didn't.
Every new machine demands the Blood Tithe: one inexplicable cut somewhere on your hand, usually inflicted by a component specifically engineered to have no business being that sharp.
Then comes the first boot.
I could build the most advanced supercomputer humanity has ever seen. Enough processing power to model the weather. Enough RAM to simulate a small European country. Hardware that makes everything I've previously owned look like a pocket calculator.
And I know exactly what I'm installing first.
Half-Life.
Always Half-Life.
At this point it's less a benchmark and more a christening.
The Rig of Theseus raises an interesting philosophical question: if every component of a computer is eventually replaced, is it still the same computer?
Yes.
Because Gordon Freeman still gets on the tram.
If Gordon runs, we're good.
