PICK A SIDE! For as long as I can remember, somebody has been insisting that videogames require an allegiance. Nintendo or Sega. PlayStation or Nintendo. PlayStation or Xbox. Xbox or PlayStation. Pick a side. There was just one problem. I had The Nintendo. Jinner down the street had The Sega. Later, I had a modchipped PlayStation - fitted by me, with a little technical assistance from Nidge - while Jinner had an N64 with Pikachu sitting on top of it. We'd play GoldenEye together. He picked Oddjob. The cunt. I kept my PlayStation 2. Kirkham had a flashed Xbox courtesy of Uncle Vinny, so Halo was never far away. I had an Xbox 360. My girlfriend had a PlayStation 3. We lived together. I had an Xbox One. Arthiis had a PlayStation 4. We were sharing a house. And throughout most of this supposedly bitter generational conflict, I was also sitting at a PC wondering why everybody was getting quite so emotionally invested in which plastic box lived underneath the television. Now we've reached Series X and PlayStation 5, cross-platform multiplayer is commonplace, and after decades of being told to pick a fucking side, I finally have my answer: No. I'll play on my PC. I'll join your game. And I'll shred all of you. Pick a Side! is a gaming-memory track about somehow living through decades of console wars without ever actually participating in one - because if I didn't have the other machine, somebody I knew usually did.
