Beginning in the northern Weinviertel near the Czech border, the train follows the historic Laaer Ostbahn, one of Austria's classic railway routes. Opened in 1870, the line was originally part of a major rail corridor connecting Vienna with Brno and remains a vital link between the rural landscapes of Lower Austria and the Austrian capital. As the journey progresses southwards, the route passes through the vineyards, fields and villages of the Weinviertel before approaching the Vienna metropolitan area. After entering Vienna's busy suburban railway network, the train continues along the city's main S-Bahn corridor, offering a front-row view of one of Austria's most intensively used railway routes. The journey then heads south on the historic Südbahn, Austria's principal railway artery toward Wiener Neustadt, Graz and the Alps. Our destination is Mödling, one of Lower Austria's most important railway towns, located at the gateway to the Vienna Woods. The contrast between the open countryside of the Weinviertel, the urban railway landscape of Vienna and the scenic southern approaches to Mödling makes this one of the most varied railway journeys in eastern Austria.
