Keeper's note, written on the night of the Hunter's Moon: 🌕🌊 The storms that have been coming through all month finally blew themselves out this afternoon, and by dark the sky over the cove was clear from one headland to the other. So I did what I only do on a night like this — I propped the big oak door wide open and let the sea in. The full moon came up over the water a little after eight and laid a long silver road across the bay, the swells are rolling in slow and breaking soft and white along the black rocks and the shingle, and the cottages on the headland have their lights on. I lit the fire basket out on the doorstep, built the hearth up low and wide over a deep bed of embers, and turned the old leather chair to face the doorway, with a tartan blanket over its arm and a whiskey poured on the little table beside it. On tonight: a little under four and a half hours of slow Celtic folk, instrumental from the first note to the last, and kept to one unhurried pace throughout — softly plucked acoustic strings over a deep open drone, quiet warm accompaniment, and long rests between the phrases. Under the music there are only two other sounds: the hearth working away beside you, and the slow wash of the sea coming in through the open door. There is no change of mood from start to finish. Your corner: the old leather armchair, just inside the open door, turned to face the sea. The tartan blanket is over its arm, the lantern on the little table is lit, and the glass is where your hand will find it. Look ahead and there is the whole moonlit cove through the doorway, with a small fire glowing on the step. Look left and the big stone hearth is burning. The bar is lit behind you, if you need anything. A night for: resting, first and last — sitting still with a warm glass and nothing that needs doing, watching the moon move across the water, reading in the chair by the door, slow and quiet work or study, or sleep when it comes, with the tide keeping its own slow time outside. — The Keeper, Firelit Tavern The door stays open as long as the night stays this calm.
