In 1971, three friends opened a small shop at Pike Place Market in Seattle, selling only roasted coffee beans. Howard Schultz joined in 1982 and brought back from Milan the idea of the "third place" — but when the founders refused to open cafés, he left to open Il Giornale in 1985 and bought the company back in 1987. From there, he turned bean shops into warm coffeehouses, took Starbucks public in 1992, and spread it around the world. Lesson one: sell the experience, not just the product. "We never sold just coffee. We sold how it feels." Lesson two: go and watch real customers live their lives. "I watched people. That was the whole research." Lesson three: grow, but protect what makes you special. "Grow big. Stay warm. That is the hard part." This episode was independently researched and compiled by How Empires Rise from public sources. It is not official information from any company mentioned. https://howempiresrise.com #Starbucks #HowEmpiresRise
