CHIKURIN (竹林) is a grove of bamboo. Bamboo is not a tree — it is a grass, and it grows so densely that a path through it becomes a corridor with walls. Stalks on both sides, taller than anything, all of them straight. Somewhere high up they creak against each other. There is no way to see out, and after a while you stop trying. Very few notes, and long silences between them — because in Japanese music the space between two sounds is called MA, and it is not an absence. It is the other half of the music.
