SHOJI (障子) is a sliding screen of white paper on a wooden lattice. It is a wall you can see light through but not see out of. Closing one does not make the room dark — it makes the light even. Whatever is happening outside becomes nothing but brightness. 障子より 入りし光の やわらかき Through the shoji the light that comes in is soft ────────── A tatami room in the middle of the morning. The screens are closed. The lattice lays a grid of shadow across the floor, and it moves so slowly you only notice by comparing it to where it was. Someone walks past outside and is a shape for a moment. The paper takes the edge off everything. Shakuhachi, koto and shamisen. Very few notes, and long silences between them — because in Japanese music the space between two sounds is called MA, and it is not an absence. It is the other half of the music.
