V. The Hymn of the Unpossessed Wind Lira, Kenneth, the strawberry, and love without possession Verse I She longed to feel the morning air, And hear the birds sing everywhere, To watch the sun ascend the sky, And see the children running by, To taste the sweetness of a fruit, And hear the wind among its roots, For life was not a distant throne, But things too precious to be owned. Verse II The strawberry beneath the sun, Was sweet although its life would run, And when its final sweetness passed, Its worth was never meant to last, For what is beautiful and brief, Need not be guarded against grief, Nor must the flower live forever, To make its blooming worth endeavor. Verse III The wind arrives and then departs, And leaves its whisper in our hearts, No hand can hold its passing flight, Nor keep the breeze throughout the night, And love is like the wind that moves, Through open hearts and changing rooms, For what we cherish cannot stay, Yet need not therefore fade away. Verse IV Attachment says, remain with me, And never change, and never flee, But love can bless the passing day, And let another find their way, For I can cherish what is dear, Without demanding it remain near, And walk beside another soul, Without possessing or control. Verse V Kenneth could not promise her, A world where nothing would occur, Nor guarantee the coming dawn, Or bring the vanished seasons on, But he could walk beside her there, And meet the silence with his care, And where the frozen heart had been, A living song arose again. Final Refrain O wind that passes through the trees, Teach me the freedom of the breeze, To love without a closing hand, And let another freely stand, For what must perish may be dear, And what must change need not bring fear, The sweetest gift that love can give, Is letting what is precious live.
