In 1595, Francis Drake sailed from England on one final expedition, hoping to capture Spanish treasure and recover the extraordinary success that had made him a legend. He would never return. But behind the disastrous voyage lies a question that history has never fully answered: did Drake lose his entire fortune, or has the story of his financial ruin grown larger than the surviving evidence? Drake and his fellow commander, John Hawkins, led an ambitious fleet into the Caribbean, where enormous rewards seemed possible. Shipowners, soldiers, investors, and commanders all had something at stake. Yet much of what they hoped to gain depended on treasure they had not captured. Trouble began before the fleet even crossed the Atlantic. Disagreements between Drake and Hawkins complicated their decisions, while Spanish commanders prepared defenses against the approaching English forces. At Puerto Rico, a valuable Spanish treasure cargo remained beyond their reach. Further setbacks along the Caribbean coast left Drake searching for another opportunity. The expedition eventually reached Nombre de Dios, where Thomas Baskerville led an exhausting march toward Panama. Spanish resistance, difficult terrain, disease, and dwindling supplies pushed the English forces toward disaster. As the campaign collapsed, Drake faced the consequences of decisions that had placed ships, men, reputations, and considerable financial interests at risk. But the story does not end with his death in January 1596. Back in England, Drake's will, his family inheritance, and disputes involving his widow Elizabeth Drake and his brother Thomas Drake reveal another side of his final expedition. The surviving records raise an important distinction between a failed military venture, lost expected profits, and the destruction of a man's personal wealth. Francis Drake's final voyage was unquestionably a disaster. Whether it truly consumed the fortune he had spent decades building is a more complicated story.
