It's 2:13 in the morning. You've just driven into an old tunnel on an empty mountain pass. Your GPS shows no road. The entrance behind you is gone. Every sign says the exit is eight miles away. And the clock on your dashboard will say 2:13 for the rest of the drive. The Night Desk has nine rules for getting out: what to do when something lands on your car, when someone knocks on your window at fifty miles an hour, when the lights turn red, when a police car waves you over, and when the radio starts describing exactly what you're doing. The tunnel, its rules and everything in it are invented. One thing in this log is real: many long road tunnels relay radio stations inside by cable, and the tunnel's control room can break in to read safety messages (PIARC Road Tunnels Manual, "Radio break-in systems").
