Far From Civilization a Family Works All Day to Fill the Barn Before Winter

Late summer on a mountainside in the Carpathians, at the end of the road. The day starts before the work does: the mother milks the cow, feeds the pigs and the chickens, and only then does the family go out to the hay. The grass was cut days ago and has been lying in the sun. Now it has to be turned, gathered, carried down the slope and lifted into the loft above the animals' shelter — this is what will feed the cow and the pigs through the months when nothing grows. In between, pears come off the tree and are sliced for drying, plums and pears go into a pot of compote, and the father builds a fire and cooks meat over it for the whole family. Two kinds of winter stores, made on the same day: one for the animals, one for the people.
