Why did Jesus have to fulfill the law for me?
Tonight’s Christian sleep story explores Matthew 5:17–20, why Jesus said He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, and why your acceptance with God cannot rest on your ability to become obedient enough.
Welcome to The Blue Hammock.
Bring your questions. Open Scripture. Rest with God.
Tonight, you arrive at an old maritime customs house overlooking a quiet Maltese harbor.
The working rooms have closed for the night.
Wooden counters stand empty.
Old desks and storage cabinets remain beneath warm low light.
Brass fixtures catch faint reflections from the harbor.
Beyond the open arches, small boats rest against the stone wall while Mediterranean water reflects the lights of the sleeping city.
And the setting carries a familiar feeling.
Requirements.
Obligations.
Records.
Standards.
Things that still need to be completed.
Perhaps Christianity has begun to feel the same way.
One more command.
One more area to improve.
One more failure to correct.
One more reason to wonder whether you have finally become obedient enough for God.
This Christian sleep story was created for adults experiencing:
• Feeling like Christianity is only a list of rules
• Trying to be good enough for God
• Trying to earn God’s acceptance
• Feeling like your obedience is never enough
• Fear that God only accepts you when you perform well
• Confusion about Jesus and the Old Testament law
• Wondering what it means that Jesus fulfilled the law
• Spiritual exhaustion from constant self-evaluation
• Struggling with legalism or performance-based Christianity
• Difficulty understanding grace, obedience, and salvation
In Matthew 5, Jesus says:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets.”
He says He came to fulfill them.
That matters.
The Gospel is not God lowering His holiness until sinful people can finally reach it.
And Jesus is not merely a better example who shows humanity how to try harder.
Christ enters the story as the obedient Son.
He fulfills what fallen humanity cannot fulfill.
He lives in perfect faithfulness to the Father.
He does not redefine righteousness.
He does not make God’s holiness smaller.
He accomplishes what sinners cannot accomplish for themselves.
And the Gospel does not end with His example.
Jesus goes to the cross.
He bears the consequence of sin.
He dies for sinners.
And He rises from the dead.
The Christian’s hope therefore does not rest in finally becoming impressive enough for God.
It rests in Christ.
Your obedience matters.
Repentance matters.
Following Jesus matters.
Growth in holiness matters.
But obedience cannot replace Christ as the foundation of your acceptance with God.
Your growth is ongoing.
Christ’s redemptive work is finished.
Your obedience remains imperfect.
Christ’s obedience was not.
Your spiritual record cannot carry the weight of salvation.
Christ can.
That is why Jesus fulfilling the law matters.
He accomplishes what sinners cannot.
And He becomes the foundation that personal performance could never provide.
So when Christianity begins to feel like a counter filled with unfinished requirements, Scripture points you away from your own record and toward Christ.
You do not need to pretend obedience is unimportant.
You simply stop asking obedience to become your savior.
As the teaching becomes quieter, you leave the working rooms of the customs house behind.
The counters remain empty.
The records remain inside.
No document needs another signature tonight.
No spiritual requirement needs to be completed before you rest.
You step onto the covered terrace overlooking the Maltese harbor.
The city lights shimmer across the water.
Small boats move gently against the stone harbor wall.
And The Blue Hammock waits beneath the shelter.
There is no scorecard beneath you.
No spiritual ledger.
No unfinished requirement supporting your peace.
Christ, not personal performance, is underneath it.
Your obedience matters.
But your obedience is not your savior.
Jesus is.
Lower the brightness.
Set your phone down.
Bring your questions.
Open Scripture.
Rest with God.
