NASA’s NICER telescope detected a strange repeating X-ray signal coming from the distant galaxy 1ES 1927+654. What makes this signal extraordinary is that its rhythm appears to be accelerating — from roughly 18 minutes to only about 7 minutes. Scientists are investigating whether a compact object, possibly a white dwarf, could be orbiting incredibly close to a supermassive black hole and slowly losing material to its extreme gravity. But the signal could also come from unusual activity inside the black hole’s accretion disk. In this video, we explore the mysterious X-ray clock, the possible white dwarf, tidal forces, spacetime distortion, black hole spin, relativistic effects, and what future observations could reveal. Could this be the final countdown of a dying star — or evidence of something even stranger? The observations and possible interpretations discussed in this video are based on the scientific scenario presented in the script; the white-dwarf explanation remains a hypothesis rather than a confirmed identification.
