"See Fun Loving Pirates Sack and Burn a Caribbean Seaport!" 😁
Pirates of the Caribbean opened in Magic Kingdom in 1973, and other than some refurbishments and upgrades, has operated ever since. It's an 8.5 minute boat ride, taking you through... Well, if you've seen Tortuga in "The Curse Of The Black Pearl", then there you are. (However, the attraction is clearly marked as being "Castillo Del Morro", which was in Old San Juan.)
This was taped in 2001. (The parrot is from 2003.) That means this is an NTSC 480i video. In the dark. A not so very good combination back then. So the video is grainy because the camcorder was trying to adjust to the dark, made more grainy by re-rendering it to 1080p. I tried my best, lol.
The worst part is at the start, where Disney is trying to get your eyes used to the darkness, with the low light scenes before the fall.
The HD version (taken after the 2006 refurbishment), can be found here: • Pirates Of The Caribbean (Post-2006 versio...
It's a high-capacity attraction with dual-loading platforms (and dual queues, which
seems to confuse newbies to the park), and the lines are usually short these days. It can theoretically push through 6000+ guests per hour at full capacity, with very long indoor queues to keep guests out of the rain.
It's a boat ride thanks to "it's a small world", which showcased the ride system at the 1964 New York World's Fair. The guest throughput astonished Imagineering. The original concept for Pirates was a walk-through attraction, already being built in Disneyland. It was scrapped and re-imagined/rebuilt as a boat ride. The attraction would open in 1967 in Disneyland.
Pirates, however, was never supposed to come to Magic Kingdom, which is probably why it isn't a day one attraction. Since they had an East Coast themed attraction in the West Coast park, they were supposed to have a West themed attraction in the East Coast park.
This attraction was supposed to be "The Western River Adventure." It never happened for various reasons (it was too ambitious for the time), so Pirates came to Magic Kingdom instead. Parts of the Western River Adventure finally made it into the park in the form of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
