In this passage, Joshua reminds the Israelites of God’s faithfulness throughout their history. Speaking on God’s behalf, he recounts how: 1. God called Abraham from a land where his ancestors worshiped other gods and led him to Canaan. 2. God blessed Abraham’s descendants through Isaac, Jacob, and Esau. 3. God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt through Moses and Aaron, performing miracles and bringing them safely through the Red Sea. 4. God protected Israel during their wilderness journey and gave them victory over enemies such as the Amorites. 5. God prevented Balaam from cursing Israel and instead made him bless them. 6. God helped Israel cross the Jordan River, conquer Jericho, and defeat the peoples living in the Promised Land. 7. God gave them a land they had not worked for, cities they had not built, and vineyards and olive groves they had not planted. Main theme: Joshua emphasizes that Israel’s existence, victories, and blessings were the result of God’s grace and power, not their own efforts. This sets the stage for his call in the following verses for the people to choose whom they will serve and to remain faithful to the Lord.
