8 Ancient Egyptian Artifacts That Wasn't Supposed to Be Found Number eight: The Dendera Light Bulbs. In the subterranean crypts of the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, carved into limestone walls during the Ptolemaic period roughly two thousand years ago, there are images that Egyptologists and electrical engineers cannot agree on. They were first examined seriously by western researchers in the late nineteenth century, and they have been argued over in academic journals and engineering conferences ever since. The carvings show large, elongated bulb-like shapes, each containing a serpentine figure coiled inside, mounted on pedestals, and connected at the base by what appears to be a cable. They are unlike any other religious imagery found across three thousand years of Egyptian iconography.
