When drought destroyed her crops during the devastating 2024–2025 growing season, Patuma Matemba and her family faced an uncertain future. Their harvest withered, their livelihoods were threatened, and the family became increasingly vulnerable.
But even in the face of adversity, a new opportunity emerged.
Through the Disaster Risk Financing (DRF) Project, Patuma received drought-resistant seeds for mustard, Chinese vegetables, cowpeas, onions, eggplants, and tomatoes. She planted the seeds, nurtured her crops, and turned her harvest into an opportunity to rebuild her livelihood.
By selling her produce, Patuma was able to invest in a water pump, a crop sprayer, and a bicycle practical assets that are helping her strengthen her farming business and prepare for future challenges.
For Patuma, these investments represent more than farming equipment. They are steps towards self-reliance, sustainable income, and a future in which her family is better prepared to withstand climate-related shocks.
As the project phases out, Patuma is looking ahead with confidence, determined to continue building on the progress she has made.
Her story is a powerful reminder that the right support can do more than help families survive a crisis, it can equip them to rebuild, invest, and stand on their own.
Watch Patuma Matemba’s inspiring journey from drought-related hardship to renewed hope and greater independence.
The Disaster Risk Financing Project supports vulnerable farming households in strengthening their livelihoods and building resilience to the impacts of drought.
