🌸 HOW TO MAKE A STYROFOAM MOLD WITHOUT A SILICONE MOLD
First, I used a piece of Styrofoam and drew the shape of my necklace on it. Using the technique shown in this video, I carefully cut around the shape and hollowed out the inside to create a handmade mold.
You can choose the depth of your Styrofoam mold depending on how thick you want your finished necklace to be. If you want a thicker pendant, around 3–4 cm or even 5 cm, make the hollow area deeper to match your desired thickness. If you prefer a thinner necklace, around 8 mm thick, hollow out the Styrofoam to approximately 1 cm.
IMPORTANT: HOW TO PREVENT RESIN FROM STICKING TO STYROFOAM
Resin sticks to Styrofoam and can be very difficult to remove. That's why I cover the entire inside surface of my Styrofoam mold with adhesive tape before pouring any resin. Make sure the surface is completely covered so the resin does not come into direct contact with the Styrofoam.
🌊 HOW TO USE UV RESIN AND EPOXY RESIN
You can make this dried flower resin necklace using either UV resin or epoxy resin. However, there is an important difference between these two types of resin.
1. Using UV Resin:
UV resin must be poured in very thin layers, approximately 1 mm at a time. Pour one thin layer, then cure it under a UV lamp for about 2–3 minutes, or according to your resin manufacturer's instructions.
Make sure each layer is completely cured before adding the next one. Repeat this process until your necklace reaches the desired thickness.
Never pour a thick layer of UV resin all at once. The UV light may not reach the deeper parts, leaving the inside uncured. This can cause the necklace to break, leak, or separate when you remove it from the mold.
For thicker jewelry, you need to repeat the thin-layer process several times.
2. Using Epoxy Resin:
Epoxy resin is another option for this project. Depending on the type of epoxy resin and its recommended pouring depth, you can pour thicker layers. For a suitable deep-pour epoxy, you may be able to pour approximately 2–3 cm at a time.
Always check the manufacturer's maximum recommended pouring depth and curing instructions.
3. Combining UV Resin and Epoxy Resin:
In my project, I used epoxy resin for the second-to-last layer and allowed it to cure for 24 hours.
After the epoxy resin had completely cured, I applied another layer of UV resin on top.
You can also apply epoxy resin over fully cured UV resin. The important thing is to make sure the previous resin layer is completely cured before applying the next type of resin.
❤️ ADDING THE HEART-SHAPED NAIL LENS
After the resin had cured, I cut out a heart shape from the nail art lens and removed its backing.
I placed a small drop of water on the cured resin surface, positioned the heart-shaped lens on top, and gently dried it with a cotton cloth.
Then I applied the final layer of resin to seal the design.
✨ SANDING AND FINISHING THE RESIN NECKLACE
After removing the necklace from my handmade Styrofoam mold, I sanded all the edges to make them smooth and neat.
I washed the necklace to remove the sanding dust.
Because sanding makes the edges and surface look scratched and cloudy, I applied a final coat of UV resin to restore the shine.
I carefully applied UV resin around all the edges and sides of the necklace, as well as the front and back.
I used the UV lamp for approximately 2 minutes on each section to make sure every part was properly cured. Always follow the curing instructions for your particular resin and UV lamp.
Finally, I drilled a small hole in the pendant and added the necklace finding.
And that's it! My beautiful dried flower resin necklace is ready!
You can use this simple handmade Styrofoam mold to create many different resin jewelry designs without buying silicone molds.
