I’m not gonna lie… this was one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write.
There were moments during the writing process when things got emotional, when I had to stop and sit with thoughts and memories I’d spent years trying not to think about. This isn’t just another song for me. It’s a part of my life, my mistakes, my regrets, and the things I wish I could go back and do differently.
I’ve got a lot of regrets over the years. Their mother and I separated when Lucas and Isabella were just babies, and no matter what differences existed between their mother and me, our kids should never have had to suffer because of the choices I made or the way I handled my problems.
The truth is, they didn’t need to be around me during the times when I wasn’t in a good place. But that doesn’t mean I had to handle my struggles the way I did. I could have talked about what I was going through. I could have reached out for help. Instead, I tried to drown my problems rather than face them.
Before I went down that rabbit hole, I had some incredible friends in my life. People who cared about me, people who would have listened, and people who probably would have helped me find a better way forward. Instead, I pushed them away and tried to drown my sorrows.
And looking back now, I realize how differently things could have gone.
Getting sober and getting my life together changed me, but it doesn’t give me the right to pretend the past never happened. I can’t get those years back. I can’t redo the moments I missed or change the decisions I made. All I can do is own my mistakes, keep working on myself, and be grateful for the time and opportunities I have today.
To my kids, Lucas and Isabella:
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry for the years I wasn’t there the way I should have been. I’m sorry for the things you may have missed out on and for the ways my choices affected your lives. You deserved better than the circumstances surrounding those years, and you never deserved to carry the weight of adult problems.
This song isn’t asking you to forget anything, and it’s not asking you to pretend everything was perfect. It’s simply me trying to put into words what I’ve struggled to say.
I love you both more than words can explain. No song could ever make up for lost time, but I hope this one helps you understand what’s in my heart.
And to my other daughter, you are loved just as much. Family isn’t about dividing love into portions. There’s plenty of it in my heart for all three of you.
This one’s for you, Lucas and Isabella. ❤️
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to listen to my music and support what I’m doing as Brandon The Misfit. Sometimes I write songs to have a little fun, sometimes I write about the world around me, and sometimes I have to dig into the parts of my life that aren’t easy to talk about.
This was one of those times.
If this song means something to you, give it a thumbs-up, leave a comment, and subscribe to the channel. I try to release at least one or two songs every week, and every bit of support helps me keep putting my music out there.
And if you’re struggling with something in your own life, please don’t make the mistake of believing you have to drown your problems alone. Talk to somebody. Reach out. You don’t have to wait until everything falls apart to ask for help.
You can’t change yesterday, but you can choose what you do with today.
