Step aboard for a driver’s-eye ride over one of Switzerland’s most unique and charming short railway lines: the Le Locle–Les Brenets line in the canton of Neuchâtel, near the French border. This compact but scenic route runs just over 4 km, linking the watchmaking town of Le Locle with the tranquil village of Les Brenets, perched above the dramatic valley of the river Doubs and the Lac des Brenets that divide Switzerland and France. The line is unique in that it uses among the oldest rolling stock in regular service in Switzerland, a BDe 4/4 motor coach (built in 1950 by Reggiane / TIBB / SAAS).
🛤️ About the Le Locle–Les Brenets Line:
Opened in 1890, the line climbs and curves through the Jura landscape, passing through several tunnels and steadily descending on a curving route from Le Locle down to Les Brenets. Today it is operated by Transports publics Neuchâtelois (transN) and forms part of regional transport in the canton of Neuchâtel.
Despite its short length, the line is technically demanding, with steep gradients, tight curvature, and a profile that reflects its late 19th-century mountain railway origins. It is fully electrified and continues to provide an important link for the local community. Unfortunately, its future is currently only guaranteed to 2031, with recurring threats to replace it with a bus service.
