I've spent the last 10 years in agency sales, helping small teams grow into big ones. This is what I've learned along the way: the wins, the losses and the bits I'd do differently.
Selling for a five person agency is a completely different job to selling for a fifty person one. Small agencies sell to founders who share their pains. Bigger agencies sell to managers with targets, budgets and careers on the line. I share how we turned a team of ten into a product, five specialists for the price of one junior hire, why you should sell results rather than a list of outputs, how long it really takes to start winning household names, and why the pitch is more of a compatibility test than a creative contest.
I've won pitches I thought were weak and lost pitches with the best work we'd ever done. In the end, it comes down to relationships.
This channel is the real story of growing a business abroad. I moved my agency from the UK to Denver, and I'm sharing what we're learning and what we're still working out along the way.
